The 5 Best Energy Savings For Everyday Life

(All posts may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure policy

Energy bills are always one of the biggest budget allocation in every household. While there is still no tip to drastically cut your energy bills – unless you suddenly decide to move to live in a mountain cave in Nepal and feed yourself from the milk of local goats –, there is plenty that you can do to reduce your bills significantly. Here are the five favorite tips from all around the world. Everywhere people are getting cost-savvy and have discovered ways to ease their energy budget.

#1. Keep A Warm Structure In Winter

There’s no denying that winter is the worst season for your energy bills: Keeping your home warm can be quite expensive, especially when it is snowing. While you can’t change the weather, you can certainly look for a roof heating cable solution to de-ice your roof and gutter thanks to a self-regulating heating system. This is the closest you can get to controlling the climate! What this means is that the overall house temperature is easier to maintain as the external structure doesn’t get as cold anymore. In short, a self-regulating cable can reduce your heating costs for the season.

#2. Don’t Let Your Phone Charger On

A study in the UK has revealed that every year chargers waste £134 million. While there isn’t any similar study in the USA, you can safely assume that the results will be even more dramatic, as the population is bigger. What this means is that leaving your charger plugged in even after your phone or laptop is fully charged is a costly mistake. Naturally, it would be a lot easier if there were another way to topping up the battery charge for your smartphone. Michael Vaga, a Belarusian teenager, has developed the HandEnergy, a device that should resolve your charging problems easily. But this is not yet a common household product.

#3. Smart Grocery Shopping Only

Your fridge and your freezer consume more energy when they are not fully packed. In short, if you leave empty space in these, you will end up paying more to keep your food fresh. So make sure to come back with full bags of shopping next time you go to the shop. Another good tip is to fill up the space with bottles of tap water in the fridge and screwed up newspaper in the freezer.

#4. Soft Clothes Washing

Your washing machine consumes most of its energy to heat the water. As a result, washing at a high temperature costs a lot more. If you keep washing your clothes at a low temperature, you can still keep them fresh and soft, and your energy bills will show the difference!

#5. Be An Efficient Cook

Why should you cook only one dish into the oven? Heating your oven requires a lot of energy, so it’s best to maximize the time and become a multitasking cook for an evening. As it is your oven’s job to keep its internal temperature, you can happily put more than one dish inside: After all, the oven will heat every shelf, so why should you use only one? As a rule of the thumb, cooking multiple dishes together will require 15% longer than it would for a single dish. But this is a great way of keeping your energy cost down, and saving precious time on cooking for the week!

Preparing For A Baby On A Shoestring Budget

(All posts may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure policy

Here’s a scary fact for you: the average family spends around $12,000 on their newborn in the first year of their life. hat money doesn’t even cover the cost of medical bills, which can add the same again on top. This figure only covers furniture, diapers, formula (for those who use it), clothes - so many clothes - and then childcare for those requiring it when they return to work. For some, it can be a huge shock to the system, especially if both parents were working before the pregnancy. It requires some careful budgeting and some smart shopping, but it is possible to prepare for the arrival of a newborn without breaking the bank.

Care for your health

The health of mom while she goes through the stages of pregnancy is of fundamental importance to the healthy development of the baby. But medical bills can really start to add up. The average, straightforward birth can cost around $3,500, with caesareans and other more complicated births coming in around $12,500. When other complications occur during the pregnancy, the bills can really start to rack up. Ensuring you have a great insurance policy is helpful. Don’t be tempted to choose it on price alone - it’s essential that it covers you and your baby throughout pregnancy, as well as any connected complications. If you can prioritize your wellbeing by eating healthily, keeping active, and trying to keep stress to a minimum, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of complications.

Prioritize needs over wants

When the pregnancy test comes back positive, it’s so tempting to start fantasizing about all the cute little booties and pretty crib cushions. Frankly, unless you’re rolling in cash, those things probably come under the umbrella of luxury rather than necessity. It’s easy to be dragged into buying luxuries which are, unfortunately, completely unnecessary.  The baby market is huge, and many objects are marketed as necessities when they’re really not. Your baby needs to be safe, comfortable, well fed, and entertained, but outside of that, everything is a luxury item. Needs include a breast pump, crib or bassinet, bottles for formula, diapers, clothing, burp cloths and more. A crib bumper and cushions, sling, changing table, and other similar objects might seem like necessities, but it’s completely possible to live without them, or improvise with household objects for a cheaper alternative.

Speak to your midwife about costs

If you don’t have medical insurance, don’t fret, there is actually a way to cut the medical bills. Head into the hospital before the birth and speak to the labor and delivery team there. They will be able to give you a list of the items and services which new mothers are usually billed for, but actually, there are plenty of things on your list that are optional. Opting out of services which you don’t need means a smaller bill, which is a bit of a blessing.

Don’t be afraid to rely on second-hand items

Newborn babies grow at a ridiculous rate. You might buy the cutest babygrows or little boots, but there is a fairly significant likelihood that they’ll only fit them for a couple of months, making their cost per wear ridiculously high. There are women the world over facing the same frustration. Which means the market is flooded with barely-worn baby clothes, which can either go in a box in the attic for an indeterminate period of time, go to landfill, or can be passed on to other expectant mothers who don’t want to, or can’t, pay full price for an entire wardrobe for their new baby. You might be fortunate enough to know other moms who will happily donate you their toddler’s old clothes, but if not there are still plenty of options. Ebay is full of bulk lots of baby clothes from moms whose babies have outgrown them. Thrift stores and Goodwill are also a treasure trove, and a quick wash when you get them home will see the clothing as good as new, for a fraction of the price.

Choose unisex styles

Here is some serious forward planning for you: when you buy baby clothes, choose unisex colors and styles so you can hand them down to any future children, or even friend’s kids. Imagine spending loads on pretty pink dresses for your daughter, only to have to buy a whole new set in a few years when your body decides to give you a son. Greens, yellows, grays and whites are perfect for avoiding this potential frustration, and you’ll also be more likely to be able to sell them on when your baby has outgrown them, if that’s what you’d prefer to do.

Shop around

Some items are inevitable. A crib or bassinet, for example, is a must buy. The temptation is to go to one store and grab every item in one day, purely for expedience. Shopping around could save you some serious cash. Car seats are one item which you can’t avoid, but the price can range from anywhere between $100 to $1000. Spend some time reading some reviews of best selling seats here, and make a decision based on your budget, not just on efficiency. Use reviews of products to determine the best value for money - obviously, some more low-end products won’t have high safety ratings, or might break faster than you’d like. It’s about finding a balance, and shopping around is by far the best way to do that.

Make a wish list for your baby shower

If nobody is planning you a baby shower, ask your sisters, mom, or best friends to make it happen. Not only is it a great time to get advice from other moms, but it's also amazing for collecting a few gifts too. People won’t think you’re cheeky if you create a wish list for the gifts you still require, and it lessens the likelihood of repeat gifts, which only need returning. Items such as teething rings, breast pumps, burp clothes, and other non-clothing are the best things to ask for. It is far easier to source clothing yourself, without the worry of having too much or too little.

Buy baby clothes as you go

Babies don’t grow at the same rate right up to adulthood; they go through growth spurts which can see them outgrowing their clothes overnight. Buying clothes as you go, rather than bulk buying clothes in varying sizes before their birth, means you won’t accidentally overbuy on a certain size. It enables you to make decisions relevant to their rate of growth, rather than based on assumptions, and could save you a significant amount of money.

Bulk buy diapers

Other than clothes and, in some cases formula, diapers are one of the biggest costs of having a newborn. Unless you plan to use cloth diapers, one of the best ways to keep costs down is by keeping diaper costs low. Make the most of discount sales to stock out, and keep an eye out for coupons and money off vouchers to bag yourself a bargain. Bulk buying them from Costco or similar stores is one of the best ways, as long as you have room to store them.

Collect free formula samples

Coupons and free samples are a lifesaver, if you can take full advantage. Check out local newspapers, and sign up for online newsletters with milk formula companies to receive free samples. Even if you’re breastfeeding, having some formula options available will give you a whole lot more freedom.

Keeping costs low when you’re planning for the birth of your baby can seem impossible, but it really isn’t. Take advantage of coupons and samples, shop around, and avoid feeling pressured into buying unnecessary products, and you’ll see costs fall significantly.

Brick Loot: Subscription Box for LEGO & Brick Lovers + My Review!

Disclosure: I received a Brick Loot Box in exchange for my review. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Please see my disclosure policy)

My boys ages 11 and 5 are crazy for LEGOS! In fact, they would play with them all day long if I let them! I like that LEGOS really encourage kids to use their minds and their imaginations. It is great creative play for them and gets them away from electronics and the television.

When my boys found out about Brick Loot, they beyond excited to review the service and to see what it was all about! Brick Loot is a box subscription company for LEGO and Brick fanatics! Subscribers receive a monthly box filled with unique, custom and never-before-seen items that work with LEGO bricks and custom building. Each month your Brick Loot box is filled with 4-8 items that were hand picked by Brick specialists who scour the world for the newest and coolest products for you to collect. They send your child unique building bricks every month, including Brick Loot exclusive LEGO items that you won't find at other stores.

Brick Loot is the creation of then 9-year-old Parker Krex. Parker has a deep love for LEGO and has accumulated a massive collection. He has played with LEGO since the age of 3 and, by the age of 4, he started reviewing his sets on YouTube. Here, his true passion for sharing LEGO with the world began. Parker has always looked for ways to make money so he can fund his LEGO addiction. One of the ways is his family’s yearly garage sale. As he was sitting at their yearly sale selling all his non-LEGO toys, Brick Loot's business plan was created. Parker and his mother put together a "Shark Tank Type" pitch to get dad as an investor and it worked! How awesome is that?

My boys received the March Brick Loot box which was all about Brickasaurus World and Dinosaurs! This was such a fun box that was pack filled with lots of fun products. My son Brady especially loved the Brick Loot exclusive minifigure while Drew loved the Triceablox! The boys spent hours putting the pieces together and have really enjoyed this month's box.

If your kiddos are into LEGOS this is the subscription box for them! As I have said before, subscription boxes are the gifts that keep on giving! Think about gifting this as a birthday present and you will be the coolest person on the block!

GO HERE to see all the details of Brick Loot and to sign your kiddos up!

Rice Krispies Bird's Nest Treats

(All posts may contain affiliate links or sponsored content. Please see my disclosure policy)

Easter is quickly approaching and these Rice Krispies Bird's Nest Treats are always a hit at my house. The boys love to help me make them and they are very yummy! You can change out the candies inside if you prefer something else over M&M's.

If you love this recipe don't forget to PIN IT!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 3 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 1 package (10 oz., about 40) JET-PUFFED Marshmallows
  • 4 cups JET-PUFFED Miniature Marshmallows
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies Cereal
  • Bag of Speckled Easter Egg M&M's

DIRECTIONS:

Melt the butter in the microwave for about 1 minute.

Add in the marshmallows and stir with the butter. Place back in the microwave for about 1 minute and 45 seconds. Stir together until completely melted together and smooth.

Place the Rice Krispies in the mixture and stir completely.

Have a 12-count Muffin pan already sprayed with Cooking Spray ready to go.

Take a generous amount of the mixture and place in each Cupcake slot.

While the slots are still soft, take a spoon and create a small hole in the middle of each one to form a nest or basket.

Let the nests harden for about 10-15 minutes. You can also go back at this time to adjust your nests and take out more of the mixture if needed.

Add in the speckled M&M's to your nests.

Eat and Enjoy!

You could really use whatever candies that you like in the middle of the nests but I love these speckled M&M's for Easter!

Unexpected Bills That Could Be An Absolute Fortune

(All posts may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure policy

It’s not the bills that you know about that are going to hit your finances the hardest. It’s the ones that you would never see coming that you need to worry about. The heavy costs that will knock your income so hard you’ll have to think about dipping into your savings. Are there ways to handle costs like this or just avoid them completely. You bet there are, and you can find the answers you need to these issues right here. Let’s start by thinking about a big bill that everyone forgets to think about.

Boiler Burn Out

If you need a boiler replacement in your home, you could be looking at a bill anywhere up to ten grand. Nope, we’re not exaggerating here, some boilers really do cost that much to replace. It’s why you might want to think about twice about buying a fixer-upper house if you don’t have a lot in savings. Boilers can last a long time, or they can break down, but the good news is that there will always be signs. You can see if a boiler is in danger of breaking. Okay...you can’t but a professional can. That’s why you should arrange for your boiler to be checked regularly, almost like clockwork. A repair is a lot easier to handle and manage, at least financially.

Fun With Fines

There are few fines you could face that will cost you an absolute fortune. There’s a road issue that can be anything up to a couple thousand but most likely a few hundred. One of the best lawyers for DWIs says that the issue for defendants isn’t the points on the license or the record but the cost. It can be absolutely huge and is intended to make you think twice about doing it again. Off the roads, you might get charged with a piracy fine. This can happen to anyone who has ever accidentally downloaded a song for free or watched a film illegally online. People who receive the fines are often picked at random and made an example of. It’s the reverse of a lottery. The best thing you can do is make sure you know the law so that you never break it and leave yourself at risk of an expensive fine.

Weather Worries

Weather can certainly cause expensive damage to your home, as can all different kinds of elements. For instance, you might find that you have damp building up on a wall in your home. This can quickly lead to mold and before you know it, a full blown insect infestation. There are plenty of bugs and beasties that love damp walls. It can cost a fortune to get rid of them.

You may have noticed though that the issues occur in stages. So, if you want to avoid the heavy cost of a fix, get a humidifier as soon as you see the damp patch. This will dry it up in no time at all.

So, while there are certainly expensive unforeseen bills that you might have to deal with through the year, there’s always options on how to handle them.

The Costs Of Going Self-employed

(All posts may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure policy

Thinking of ditching the corporate ladder and finding a quicker route to becoming your own boss? Going self-employed certainly has its advantages, allowing you much more freedom over how much you earn and how you earn it. However, going self-employed also comes with a variety of costs that are worth considering first

Your taxes

As someone that is registered self-employed, you are in charge of calculating your own taxes. This can come with its perks, such as being able to claim expenses you otherwise might not be able to working for someone else. However, for many, it can also be a time consuming job which requires extra funding to make more efficient.

Make a miscalculation and you could end up paying a fine. You may wish to hire Joe Callahan for your tax attorney, or another local lawyer to handle these claims – most honest miscalculations can be legally battled against. However, you could avoid any errors at all in your books by hiring an accountant to take care of your books for you. On top of this there is software such as Xero you can buy for taking a DIY approach. Either way, you’ll be shelling out some money to keep your books in check, so make sure you budget for this.

Office space

Thinking of hiring an office? This can be a huge expense when going self-employed. Whether you rent or buy, you then have to further account for energy bills, various commercial taxes and potentially property insurance.

Fortunately, there are ways to cut costs in this area. A co-working space or shared office can be useful for giving you a place to work from home, whilst being much cheaper than a standard rented office. However, if you still want to save costs, working from home can be an even better option. You can outsource remote staff and meet clients in coffee bars, provide your work is wholly computer and phone based and you don’t work in retail or manufacturing. Working from home can have its distractions, so take this into account when choosing where to work.

Tools and equipment

Going self-employed will require you to buy all your own equipment and tools. Even if you’re working from home, you may want to purchase a separate phone and computer to keep your work/home life apart. There may be other costs too such as printer ink, fuel for meeting clients, company vehicles, security and specialist software, handyman tools, cleaning fluids, furniture and perhaps even uniforms. This doesn’t even include extra marketing and retailing costs. Depending on what trade you’re in, costs will vary wildly – some people may hardly need to spend a nickel, whilst others may need funds of hundreds of grand.

Hiring staff

The decision to take on staff should not be taken lightly. Whilst a bigger workforce will allow you to take on more work and therefore take in more money, there are all kinds of costs to consider such as wages, insurance, safety equipment, recruitment costs, training costs, legal costs and employee incentives.

Most business owners initially outsource staff from other companies to deal with aspects such as marketing or admin. Hiring part-time staff or voluntary staff may also be a solution. Don’t take on full-time paid staff until you’re certain you can financially provide all their needs.

Oscar’s Oasis, for the school age set, follows the adventures of desert-dwelling, water-and food-seeking Oscar the lizard and the Trio – Popy the fox, Buck the vulture and Harchi the hyena – with whom he’s always competing for resources. Stuck in the middle of the arid desert, Oscar and his friends (and foes!) try to survive and, above all, not die from boredom in their endless quest to find water, shade, food, and something fun to do. Life can be tough for a lonely lizard and it sometimes seems like the entire world is against him – which, in the case of Oscar, it often is! – but he always tries to make the best of every situation.

Doing Up Your Bedroom? Here’s What To Save On & What To Splurge On

(All posts may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure policy

When you become a mom, your priorities change. You’re not longer the most important person in your life, your new addition is. The moment you hold them for the first time you swear to yourself that you will always do the best that you can for them, which is why a lot of parents put their needs on the backburner and focus on their children’s needs instead. When it comes to money, you most probably are always looking for ways to cut costs and make savings, to make your money go that little bit further, like all moms are.

This means that when it comes to doing up an area of your home, such as your bedroom, for instance, you naturally want to make as many savings as possible. While it’s good to cut costs where you can, it’s important to realize that there are some things that it’s fine to save on and others that you should splurge on. Sometimes, by splurging you can actually save yourself money in the long-run, so it’s worth it. Take your flooring in your bedroom, for instance. If you opt for carpet it’s cheaper than hard flooring, but it won’t last as long or wear as well, so you will end up replacing it a lot sooner than you would replace hard flooring, which means that carpet costs more in the long run.

bedroom ideas.jpg

Without further ado, below is a list of things that you should save or splurge on when it comes to doing up your bedroom.

Save on: Furniture

Furniture is one of the things that you should save on when doing up your bedroom or any area of your home for that matter. This doesn’t mean buying cheaply made pieces of MDF or plastic furniture, what it means is picking affordable real wood pieces for low prices, either online or second-hand. Furniture doesn’t need to be expensive to fit with the design and style of your bedroom or to do the job it’s intended for, so it’s worth trying to save as much money as possible on it. That way you can put any money that you save into paying for another part of the update.

Splurge on: Bedding

Although you can pick up various designs and style of bedding for low prices, what you don’t want to do is buy budget bedding that’s not of a good quality and won’t be comfortable for you. The fact is that synthetic bedding can come cheap, but it’s not comfortable, doesn’t wash well, and won’t last for long, whereas cotton bedding tends to be more comfortable, washes well, and stands the test of time. It’s a much better option to get your bed linen and pillows from a luxury company like Plumeria Bay when it’s on sale, rather than buying it super cheap from a discount home store. As that way, you know that you’re getting good quality bedding. It might cost you more but at least it will last well and stand the test of time, plus it will also be more comfortable.

Save on: Paint

When it comes to buying paint for your room, don’t spend a lot buying a branded paint, as non-branded budget paint works just as well. Paint is paint, so whether you buy budget paint or high-quality branded paint, it won’t make a difference. So paint is one thing that you can save money on and not worry about doing so. Whether you want to paint your room white or add a little color to it with a pastel hue, there’s sure to be a budget-friendly paint available that you can use for it, allowing you to keep costs nice and low.

Splurge on: Mattress

If there’s one thing that you splurge on, let it be your mattress. The fact is that cheap mattresses can not only damage your back and cause you not to sleep well, but they also don’t stand the test of time. If you want to ensure that you’re able to get a good night’s sleep and aren’t wasting money on a cheap mattress, then it pays to buy a good quality one. It might cost you more, but if it means that it will last well and be comfortable for you, giving your back and neck the support it needs, it’s worth splurging on it.

Save on: Rug

Every bedroom needs a rug; it adds color and style to the space. When it comes to picking a rug, you could spend a few dollars or hundreds, depending on what your budget is. The truth is that budget-friendly rugs can look quite expensive, so when it comes to picking a rug for your bedroom redesign, make sure to save as much money as possible on it. You would be amazed at the rugs you can pick up for a low price; it’s just a case of knowing where to look to get the best deal on them, that’s all. For budget-friendly rugs that look more expensive than they are, the best places to look are online and in your local budget-friendly home store. You will be amazed at just how nice budget-friendly rugs can look.

Splurge on: Curtains

You might think of curtains as being a budget-friendly buy, and they can be, but if you want curtains that will last well and create the right look, it’s worth splurging. Say, for instance, you want blackout curtains, while you could line ordinary curtains with blackout material, they never seem to work as well as they could do. So when it comes to your curtains (or blinds), it’s best to invest in good quality ones, as that way you know that they will do the job. Ideally, you want to ensure that any curtains that you pick are easy to wash and dry, so that should they get dirty you can have cleaned without worrying that cleaning them will ruin them.

Save on: Accessories

When it comes to picking out accessories for your bedroom, this is one thing that it is super easy to save on. You see, there are plenty of stores that sell a selection of smart, stylish accessories perfect for using in bedrooms that are low-priced and budget-friendly. There are various high street stores, as well as an array of online stores to choose from when it comes to choosing accessories from, so you’ve got plenty of choice in terms of the prices that you’re willing to pay. The great thing about accessories is that even cheap designs can make a big impact on the look and feel of the space. It’s about being picky about the pieces that you buy and only investing in pieces that fit the style and design of your room. If you’re stuck for accessory ideas, sites like Pinterest and We Heart It can be really useful as they’re packed full of inspiration and ideas, so are worth taking the time to have a browse of.

When it comes to doing up your bedroom, it’s easy to spend a lot of money on it. However, the good news is that there are plenty of ways that you can save money when it comes to redesigning your bedroom, it’s just a case of knowing what to save and when to splurge, as explained above. There are some items that it’s fine to save on, while there are others that you really should splurge on, such as your mattress, for instance, as the last thing you want is to sleep on a low-quality mattress and develop a back problem.
